SOLID WASTE SITE ATTENDANT 

 

General Statement of Duties 

 

Performs responsible work operating and maintaining a solid waste recycling center. 

 

Distinguishing Features of the Class 

 

                An employee in the class assists the public with unloading and sorting solid waste and recyclable materials at a collection site. Work includes maintaining site in neat and clean condition; providing information about operations and policies to customers; assisting disabled customers; maintaining simple records of work activities; and other related tasks. The employee is subject to inside and outside environments and extreme temperatures. The employee may also be subject to the final OSHA standards on blood borne pathogens. Work is performed under regular supervision and is reviewed for public relations, site cleanliness, and accuracy of records. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities 

Essential Duties and Tasks 

                Responsible for opening and closing the Recycling Center as prescribed by the operating schedule.

                Responsible for verifying proof of residency for anyone wishing to use the site to dispose of recyclable materials.

                Responsible for observing and inspecting every load during disposal and ensuring that each load is in the proper container and not over the daily or weekly amounts allowed.

                Monitors all recycling containers, ensuring that they do not get over loaded.

Coordinates with Supervisor when there are recyclable materials that need to be picked up from the recycling center.

Responsible for completing all necessary forms and records pertaining to site activities and number of visitors and submits records to their Supervisor for review.

                Answers incoming calls and provides information as needed and answers any questions as required. 

Directs and assists citizens to appropriate disposal containers and recycling bins. 

Greets citizens and explains recycling programs, answers questions, and enforces policies; assists with sorting materials and storing in appropriate bins.

Responsible for the grounds maintenance by keeping all stations neat and clean; sweeping and picking up litter from and around any and all work areas when time is available.

Inspect the work location at the end of the day to ensure that all the materials are properly placed in correct containers, under cover, and/or on impervious surfaces as each item is required. 

               Responsible for keeping the recycling center office building clean and for reporting any issues to their Supervisor immediately. 

              Assists elderly and disabled citizens with site use. 

 Additional Job Duties

Recruitment and Selection Guidelines 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

                Working knowledge of the standards, methods, and policies regarding the collection and sorting procedures of various solid waste and recyclable materials. 

                Ability to communicate policies and information to the public effectively. 

                Ability to interpret and apply policies on waste disposals in various containers and methods. 

                Ability to establish effective working relations with the public and coworkers. 

                Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions. 

                Ability to maintain simple records of work activities. 

 

Physical Requirements 

                Must be able to perform life functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. 

                Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.                                                Must possess visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work and to prepare simple records. 

 

Desirable Education and Experience 

                Must possess a high school diploma or General Education Development (GED) diploma; Ability to read and write; and two (2) years of experience involving grounds maintenance work and dealing with the public; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

 

Special Requirements 

               Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.  Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
